rin-daughter-of-mnemosyne-blu-ray
Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne - Blu-ray

Rin Asogi is an immortal private detective working out of a cluttered Tokyo office with her partner Mimi. She drinks too much vodka, takes cases nobody else will touch, and cannot be killed — stab her, blow her up, put her through industrial machinery, and she comes back. She has been coming back for a very long time. The series unfolds across six episodes spanning sixty-five years — from the 1990s through the 2050s — each one a self-contained story in Rin's ongoing war of attrition with Apos, an eternal being obsessed with sacrificing her to Yggdrasil, the tree of all life that grants immortality to women who touch its fruit and godhood to men. Threading through the decades is a bloodline — the descendants of a man whose genetics keep intersecting with Rin's cases in ways she cannot entirely explain. The tone is hard-boiled adult thriller with genuine horror elements: the series is explicit about violence, torture, and sexuality in ways that serve a story with more structural ambition than its premise suggests.

Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne — known in Japan as Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi — is a six-episode OVA series produced by Xebec and GENCO, directed by Shigeru Ueda, written by Hiroshi Ohnogi (Planetes, Arjuna, Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd GIG), and scored by Yoshihisa Hirano — the same composer as Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad and Chaika: The Coffin Princess. It was commissioned to commemorate the 15th anniversary of AT-X — a premium satellite anime channel in Japan — and aired from February to July 2008. Each episode runs approximately 45 minutes and is set roughly a decade apart from the previous one, giving the series an unusual structural breadth for a six-episode OVA. The English dub was produced by FUNimation under ADR director Christopher Bevins and features Colleen Clinkenbeard as Rin and Jamie Marchi as Mimi. The original Complete Series Blu-ray was released July 20, 2010 at an SRP of $59.98. A FUNimation Essentials reissue followed July 16, 2019 at $29.98.

Notable Staff & Voice Talent

Director: Shigeru Ueda
Screenplay: Hiroshi Ohnogi (Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd GIG)
Studio: Xebec / GENCO
Music: Yoshihisa Hirano (Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad)
Opening Theme: "Cause Disarray" by Galneryus
Ending Theme: "Disintegration" by Galneryus

Japanese Cast:
• Mamiko Noto as Rin Asogi
• Rie Kugimiya as Mimi (Fullmetal Alchemist — Alphonse Elric)
• Yuu Asakawa as Apos

English Dub Cast (FUNimation — ADR Director: Christopher Bevins):
• Colleen Clinkenbeard as Rin Asogi (FMA 2003 — Lust, One Piece — Luffy)
• Jamie Marchi as Mimi

Blu-ray Features (FUNimation Original Complete Series, July 20, 2010)

• All 6 OVA Episodes (~45 min each) — Complete Series, 2 Discs
• Episode 2 Commentary
• Promotional Videos
• Japanese Cast Interview
• Textless Opening & Closing Songs
• Original English Trailers
• FUNimation Previews
• 1080p High Definition 16:9 Native
• Dolby TrueHD English 5.1 / Dolby TrueHD Japanese 5.1
• Note: FUNimation Essentials reissue (July 16, 2019, $29.98) contains same episodes and extras at lower SRP

Spoken Languages: English & Japanese Audio, English Subtitles

Edition Details

Japanese Title: ムナイモス (Munaimos / Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi)
Runtime: ~300 Minutes (Complete OVA Series, 6 Episodes, 2 Discs)
Director: Shigeru Ueda
Blu-ray Release Year: 2010 (U.S. Original Complete Series, FUNimation Entertainment); Essentials reissue July 16, 2019
Original Broadcast Date (Japan): February 3 – July 6, 2008 (AT-X)
Publisher: FUNimation Entertainment
Rating: TV-MA
Region: Region A (North America)
Note: Original $59.98 Complete Series edition — not the Essentials reissue ($29.98, July 2019).
