yurushiki-blu-ray
Yuyushiki - Blu-ray
Yui, Yuzuko, and Yukari have been best friends since middle school and have just started high school together. They join the Data Processing Club — a tiny room with two computers, a whiteboard, and no other members. Their activities consist primarily of looking things up on the internet and then going on extended tangents about whatever comes up: the relative merits of ketchup versus mayonnaise, the behavior of hermit crabs, the etymology of random words, the correct pronunciation of things nobody actually says aloud. Yuzuko generates non sequiturs at a pace that defeats comprehension. Yukari follows her down every tangent with complete sincerity. Yui, the most grounded of the three, watches them with the fond exasperation of someone who has accepted that this is her life and genuinely wouldn't change it. Their teacher Miss Matsumoto, whom they call Mother, oversees the club with similar energy. Nothing happens. Everything is funny. The friendship at the center is quietly and genuinely warm.

Yuyushiki is a 12-episode slice-of-life comedy produced by Kinema Citrus — the studio behind Made in Abyss and Black Bullet — directed by Kaori, with series composition by Natsuko Takahashi, and based on Komata Mikami's manga serialized in Manga Time Kirara, the same anthology magazine that published Azumanga Daioh, K-On!, and Squid Girl. It aired on TV Tokyo from April to June 2013. The series was directed by Kaori — one of a small number of anime directors known by a single name and one of the more distinctive voices in the iyashikei school comedy genre, who also directed Sabagebu!. The series is frequently cited alongside Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star as one of the purest expressions of the Kirara comedy aesthetic — three-girls-doing-nothing as a formal commitment rather than a backdrop for plot. A one-episode OVA was released in 2017. Sentai Filmworks licensed the series and released an original Sub.Blu-ray on August 5, 2014; the current in-print Sub.Blu-ray Complete Collection was released February 1, 2022. Subtitle only — no English dub was produced.

Notable Staff & Voice Talent

Director: Kaori (Sabagebu!, Yuyushiki OVA 2017)
Series Composition: Natsuko Takahashi (芋虫ぽんぽこ, Slow Start)
Original Manga: Komata Mikami (serialized in Manga Time Kirara, Houbunsha; English license: Yen Press, 15+ volumes ongoing)
Character Design: Kazunori Iwakura
Studio: Kinema Citrus (Made in Abyss, Black Bullet, Yuyushiki, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0)
Music: Yoshiaki Dewa
Opening Theme: "Yuyushiki" by YuiYuiYu (Minami Tsuda, Rumi Okubo & Risa Taneda)
Ending Themes: Multiple ending themes performed by cast

Japanese Cast:
• Minami Tsuda as Yui Ichii
• Rumi Okubo as Yuzuko Nonohara (Sabagebu! — Kayo Goutokuji)
• Risa Taneda as Yukari Hinata (Squid Girl — Cindy Campbell, Akame ga Kill! — Chelsea, Fuuka — Koyuki)
• Yui Horie as Chiho Aikawa / Miss Matsumoto (Kurogane Communication, Love Hina, Fruits Basket, Familiar of Zero — Henrietta, Star Ocean EX — Rena, Freezing Vibration — Amelia Evans)
• Ai Kayano as Kei Okano (School-Live! — Yuuri Wakasa, Akame ga Kill! — Chelsea)
• Megumi Han as Fumi Hasegawa

Blu-ray Features (Sentai Filmworks Sub.Blu-ray Complete Collection)

• All 12 Episodes on 2 Discs — Complete Series
• Shorts (Nyanyashiki trailer collection)
• Clean Opening Animation
• Clean Closing Animation
• Japanese 2.0 Dolby Digital
• Subtitle Only — No English Dub Produced
• Sentai Filmworks Previews

Spoken Languages: Japanese Audio Only, English Subtitles

Edition Details

Japanese Title: ゆゆ式 (Yuyushiki)
Runtime: ~300 Minutes (Complete Series, 12 Episodes, 2 Discs)
Director: Kaori
Blu-ray Release Year: 2014 (U.S. Original Sub.Blu-ray, August 5 — Sentai Filmworks); current in-print edition February 1, 2022
Original Broadcast Date (Japan): April 6 – June 29, 2013 (TV Tokyo)
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Rating: 14+
Region: Region A (North America)
Subtitle only — no English dub produced.
