3D Dot Game Heroes - Playstation 3

3D Dot Game Heroes for the PlayStation 3 is a PS3-exclusive action-adventure developed by Silicon Studio and published by Atlus in North America, built as an unabashed love letter to the 8-bit era of gaming, particularly The Legend of Zelda. The kingdom of Dotnia was once a peaceful 2D world, until its king decided to convert the entire land into 3D to attract more tourists. The Dark King Onyx once brought an age of darkness upon Dotnia and was sealed away by a legendary hero. Now the Dark Bishop Fuelle has stolen that seal and darkness threatens the kingdom again. A new hero must take up the legendary sword and explore the land of Dotnia to restore peace.

The gameplay mirrors the classic top-down Zelda formula: players explore an overworld from dungeon to dungeon, collect items like boomerangs and bows, solve puzzles, and fight bosses. What makes 3D Dot Game Heroes visually extraordinary is its voxel-based art style, where every character, enemy, tree, and building in the world is made of tiny 3D cubes rendered in high definition, giving it the look of classic 2D pixel art exploded into the third dimension. The hero's sword grows in length and width as power is upgraded, eventually filling nearly the entire screen. A robust character creation tool lets players design their own custom hero block by block, and the community shared thousands of creations online. The game packs in dozens of references and jokes aimed at veterans of classic gaming.

Silicon Studio developed the game in just 10 months using their own middleware technology, with none of the team having prior PS3 development experience. It was published in Japan by FromSoftware in November 2009 and by Atlus in North America on May 11, 2010. Game Informer called it "an unapologetic tribute to The Legend of Zelda" that delivers "retro gaming bliss."
