Academy City, the most advanced scientific city in the world, exists in a state of perpetual tension with the magical organizations that operate in the shadows of the larger world. Toma Kamijo has the ability to negate any supernatural phenomenon with his right hand — the Imagine Breaker — and has spent Season 1 getting pulled into conflicts between these two worlds.

Season 2 escalates dramatically: the Book of the Law, an encoded grimoire containing catastrophic magical power, has been stolen, drawing Toma, Index, and their allies into a battle against church factions and holy assassins while they try to protect the one nun who can decipher it. Meanwhile in Academy City, the return of the Level 6 Shift project — a program to forcibly push Accelerator, the most powerful esper in the city, to absolute power through mass murder — threatens to destabilize everything. A school festival, a Roman Catholic conspiracy, and the ongoing cold war between magic and science collide across 24 episodes of significantly expanded scope.
