Three years after Belldandy arrived in Keiichi's life, their relationship has settled into something warm and steady. Then a figure from Belldandy's past arrives: Celestin, a god who was once her beloved mentor and teacher — imprisoned on the moon for centuries after attempting to overthrow the Yggdrasil system and free both gods and humans from what he saw as divine tyranny. Released by the mysterious fairy Morgan Le Fey, Celestin travels to Earth and uses Belldandy as a catalyst, erasing all her memories of Keiichi and infecting the Yggdrasil system with a virus that threatens to destabilize reality itself. Keiichi, watching the woman he loves look at him as a stranger, must find a way to reach her while Urd, Skuld, and the other goddesses work to stop the cascade failure before it destroys both the divine realm and Earth. Whether Belldandy's feelings for Keiichi exist somewhere beneath the erasure — and whether love is something that can survive being taken away — is the question at the film's heart.
Ah! My Goddess: The Movie is a 106-minute theatrical film directed by Hiroaki Gōda — the same director as the original OVA series — produced by AIC, distributed in Japan by Shochiku, and released theatrically on October 21, 2000. It is set in the OVA continuity and requires familiarity with the five-episode OVA series. The screenplay was written by Michiko Yokote and Yoshihiko Tomizawa. The film features a significantly expanded production scale relative to the OVA — widescreen photography, orchestral score, and theatrical-grade animation — and an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Licensed in North America by Geneon Entertainment; released on VHS on November 27, 2001 and on DVD on November 8, 2005. The DVD includes a bonus episode of the Adventures of the Mini-Goddess short series.
