Air Buster for the Sega Genesis is a port of Kaneko's 1990 horizontal arcade shoot-'em-up — one of the most visually accomplished and creatively designed shooters in the Genesis library, and a standout entry in a console generation packed with strong competition in the genre. Two players control the Blaster Fighter starships in their mission to destroy a mysterious mechanical fortress orbiting Earth, battling through six stages of relentless horizontal combat across wildly varied environments. Stage one opens over the seaports of Tokyo before robots begin tearing the city apart around you; stage two sends players hurtling through a long underground tunnel with speed sections that punish the unprepared; stage three moves into mountainous terrain before breaking out into space above the Earth; and stage four introduces zero-gravity flight, where the ship handles dramatically more loosely and every movement requires recalibration. Mega placed the game at #13 in their Top Mega Drive Games of All Time.
Players choose from seven available weapons that fundamentally change the ship's firepower and approach — including the Striker, which adds vertically aligned drone Options that mirror the player's fire; the Reverse Shot, which fires diagonal streams from the ship's rear; the Six-Way Shot, which blasts semi-automatic fire in six directions simultaneously; and the Homing Shot, which tracks enemies automatically. Flying orange power-up pods release multiple pickups at once, and a chargeable smart bomb clears all enemy bullets from the screen in an emergency. One of the most notable features of the Genesis version is simultaneous two-player co-op — rare among horizontal shooters on home consoles at the time, as all games in the Thunder Force, Gradius, and R-Type series were strictly single-player on home hardware. The Genesis version features significantly more detailed backgrounds than the TurboGrafx-16 port, with more layers of parallax scrolling and larger sprites — the closest home port to the arcade original's visual fidelity.
Air Buster was developed by Kaneko and published in North America by Sharp Image Electronics in 1991, one year after the arcade release. The game received favorable reviews for its visuals, sound effects, and gameplay, with MegaTech awarding it 78% and Mean Machines giving it 80%. The Sega Genesis release was later ported to the Project EGG digital storefront in Japan in 2014, but remains unavailable on any modern Western digital platform — making the original cartridge the only way to own the game physically in North America. Known as Aero Blasters on the TurboGrafx-16, the Genesis version is the less commonly encountered of the two home ports and a worthwhile find for any collector of Genesis shooters.
