Ape Out for the Nintendo Switch is a wildly intense top-down smash-'em-up published by Devolver Digital — a game about one thing: you are a gorilla, and you need to get out. Armed guards stand between you and freedom. Your only tools are your hands — grab them, throw them, use them as shields, smash them into walls. It is violent, it is fast, and it is beautiful.
The gameplay is built on just two inputs — grab and smash — but the depth that emerges from them is remarkable. Every encounter demands split-second decisions: who do you grab first? Do you use the guard as a human shield or throw him at the next one? Do you close the gap or duck around the corner? The procedurally generated levels ensure no run plays out the same twice, and the moment-to-moment tension never lets up.
What elevates Ape Out above its premise is its presentation. The visuals are bold and graphic — flat colors, high contrast, pure Saul Bass poster energy. The soundtrack is live jazz drumming that responds dynamically to your actions in real time, accelerating and intensifying as the chaos escalates. Every hit, every explosion, every guard's splattery end lands with a percussive crack that feels synchronized to the music. It is one of the most cohesive audio-visual experiences on the platform.
Developed by Gabe Cuzzillo and published by Devolver Digital, Ape Out released on Nintendo Switch on February 28, 2019. Nintendo Life called it "a refreshingly original experience" and gave it a strong recommendation. A short but intensely replayable experience with an arcade mode for score chasers.
