Four centuries after the demon god Anthrasax nearly destroyed civilization, the world of Metallicana clings to a fragile peace — until the Dark Rebel Army returns, seeking to resurrect Anthrasax and finish what they started. Bastard!! is one of the most gloriously self-aware and unabashedly entertaining OVAs of the early 90s — a sword-and-sorcery action comedy that wears its influences proudly on its sleeve, from Dungeons & Dragons to hair metal to hard rock. Based on Kazushi Hagiwara's massively popular manga, the OVA is produced by AIC with vivid fantasy aesthetics, outrageous spell names drawn from bands like Metallica, Megadeth, and Judas Priest, and a lead character who is simultaneously the hero, the villain, and the punchline all at once. Directed by Katsuhito Akiyama with music by Kohei Tanaka, it is pure, uncut 90s anime energy.
