Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling for the Nintendo Switch is the indie RPG that Paper Mario fans have been waiting for — a love letter to Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door so faithful that Nintendo Life called it "that GameCube classic's terrifying stalker." Hidden within the lush continent of Bugaria lies a legendary artifact called the Everlasting Sapling — a plant said to grant immortality. The Ant Queen sends explorers out to find it, and three unlikely heroes answer the call: Vi, a scrappy honeybee armed with a boomerang; Kabbu, a sturdy beetle with a horn; and Leif, a mysterious moth with ice magic and a past he can't remember.
The turn-based combat draws directly from the original Paper Mario formula — timed button presses amplify attacks and reduce incoming damage, enemies are visible on the overworld before battle initiates, and a medal system lets players customize their playstyle with passive and active abilities. Each of the three heroes has unique field abilities used to solve puzzles in the overworld: Vi can use her boomerang to hit distant switches, Kabbu can dig and cut through obstacles, and Leif can freeze water and enemies solid.
The writing is sharp, the world is charming, and the difficulty bites harder than the original Paper Mario games right from the start — a Hard Mode medal available early pushes it further for veteran players. Multiple side quests, a cooking system, and post-game content add substantial depth beyond the main story.
Developed by Moonsprout Games and published by Dangen Entertainment, Bug Fables released on Nintendo Switch on May 28, 2020. It was ranked the #11 Best Switch Game of 2020 on Metacritic with 98% overwhelmingly positive Steam reviews. An essential pick for JRPG fans and anyone who misses what Paper Mario used to be.
