Builder Land - PC Engine Super CD-Rom

Builder Land is a whimsical action puzzle / rescue adventure game for the PC Engine, where you guide a small construction-bot across hazardous environments by placing ladders, bridges, blocks, and structural tools in real time to create a safe path forward.

The story of this game is quite simple, presented during the intro as a series of short scenes without words. Melba is an easy-going guitar player who is having a picnic with his girlfriend; suddenly, an ultra-strong, evil-looking character appears and kidnaps the poor girl, sailing away on his ship. The brave Melba swims after the ship, and finds a bottle with a map inside. Knowing now the way to the evil kidnapper's lair, Melba embarks on a journey without further hesitation!

Somewhat similar to the famous Lemmings, the player has no control over the protagonist himself (except on a few occasions, when "boss" enemies must be defeated by throwing certain objects at them). Instead, the player must manipulate the environment in order to build a path for Melba, deal with the enemies, etc. Melba is for the most part entirely helpless and simply walks forward automatically. Rather than directly controlling the character’s movement, you modify the terrain and obstacles around them — making the gameplay feel like a hybrid of:

• puzzle construction

• Lemmings-style route guidance

• timing-based environmental strategy

Each stage introduces new hazards and mechanics including:

• collapsing platforms

• moving conveyor paths

• falling debris

• trap pits & water hazards

You must anticipate movement patterns and build solutions as events unfold, giving the game a clever challenge curve.

The game has a lighthearted tone, colorful sprite art, and expressive animation — making it a charming oddball entry in the PC Engine’s puzzle library.
