Tokyo, the near future. A new law has passed allowing ordinary citizens to carry and use firearms. Crime has spiked — but the arrest rate has dropped, because the Recently Armed Police of Tokyo, RAPT, has filled the power vacuum with lethal efficiency. Into this city of loaded guns and shifting power comes a four-woman mercenary team operating out of a custom trailer: Jo, a cold, devastatingly skilled gunfighter who pilots the enormous battle mech Jango; Meg, her impulsive partner who gets kidnapped with remarkable regularity and inspires Jo's most extreme combat responses; Sei, the composed, aristocratic leader who manages the team's contracts and finances; and Amy, the teenage hacker and tactical support operator. Caught in the middle is Kyohei, an aspiring pastry chef who accidentally ends up cooking for the team and watching his normal life evaporate one gunfight at a time. As the team navigates increasingly dangerous contracts, a dark conspiracy involving cybernetic demons, an underground criminal syndicate, and the origins of Jo's own engineered combat abilities begins to emerge.

Burst Angel is a 24-episode action series produced by Gonzo — the studio behind Vandread, Gate Keepers, Noir, and Last Exile — and directed by Koichi Ohata, known for his heavily stylized action direction on MD Geist and Genocyber. It aired on TV Asahi from April to September 2004 and draws heavily from the girls-with-guns genre established by Koichi Mashimo's Bee Train trilogy, filtered through Gonzo's signature high-production CG mecha sequences and a near-future cyberpunk aesthetic.

The 7-disc Complete Series DVD Box Set released by FUNimation on March 27, 2007 collects all 24 episodes. The series also spawned a prequel OVA — Burst Angel: Infinity — released separately by FUNimation on November 13, 2007.
