Cadash - Sega Genesis

Cadash for the Sega Genesis is a port of Taito's 1990 arcade action-RPG — a sword-and-sorcery side-scrolling adventure that blends the momentum of a beat-'em-up with light RPG progression and town exploration. The setting is a medieval fantasy world in the tradition of classic high fantasy — a kingdom under siege from the underground demon realm of Cadash, whose ruler the Balrog has kidnapped Princess Salassa and declared war on the human world. King Dilsarl summons a lone hero to descend into the depths, battle through five expansive zones spanning meadows, caves, forests, and underwater environments, and ultimately storm Castle Cadash to reclaim the princess and drive back the darkness. NPC characters throughout the towns between stages have genuine dialogue that fleshes out the world, and the game's cinematic story presentation for an early Genesis title was noted by reviewers at the time.

Gameplay is a fluid blend of side-scrolling action and RPG mechanics. The more monsters killed, the higher the player climbs in levels — each level gained awarding increased power, skill, and hit points. Gold looted from enemies is spent in town shops on upgraded weapons, armor, healing herbs, antidotes, and — uniquely to the Genesis version — elixirs purchasable at item shops that serve as extra lives, adding a strategic resource layer absent from the arcade and TurboGrafx-16 versions. Two playable classes are available in the Genesis port — the Warrior, who is durable and excels at close-range combat with heavy weapons, and the Wizard, who is fragile but commands a growing arsenal of spells including screen-clearing Storm of Daggers and a homing lightning spell that trivializes many bosses. The Genesis version features darker, grittier visuals than the TurboGrafx port with a zoomed-in camera that makes sprites impressively large, and the arcade's punishing timer mechanic is removed entirely, letting players explore and grind at their own pace. Two-player simultaneous co-op is fully supported, with each player choosing a different class and sharing the screen.

Developed and published by Taito, Cadash was ported to the Sega Genesis in 1992 — notably never receiving a Japanese release on the platform, making it exclusive to Western markets on the console. The Genesis version omits the Priestess and Ninja classes present in the arcade and TurboGrafx-16 versions, which remains its most-cited limitation, though the Warrior and Wizard are considered by many fans to be the strongest characters in the game. The arcade version was later included in Taito Memories Volume 2 for PS2 in 2005, and the Taito Legends 2 compilation for Xbox and PC in 2007, and Hamster Corporation released the arcade version on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in August 2023 — but the Genesis cartridge remains the only home console version ever released in North America, making it a notable collector's piece in the Taito Genesis library.
