Sakura Kinomoto wins a lottery at her favorite shop — a trip to Hong Kong for four people. She brings her best friend Tomoyo, her brother Touya, and his friend Yukito, with Kero hidden in her bag. Hong Kong is where Syaoran Li and his cousin Meiling live, and their reunion is warm — but Sakura has been having strange dreams of dark water and a mysterious woman, and the dreams intensify as soon as she arrives. Two birds lead her to an old well in the city where the spirit of a sorceress named Madoushi reaches out to her. Madoushi has been imprisoned there for decades by Clow Reed — the creator of the Clow Cards — and her desperate love for him, still burning after all this time, has curdled into something that puts everyone Sakura cares about in danger. The film is set between the first and second arcs of the TV series.

Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie is an 80-minute theatrical film directed by Morio Asaka — the same director as the TV series — produced by Madhouse and Bandai Visual, and written by Nanase Ohkawa of CLAMP. It was released in Japanese theaters on August 21, 1999 and won the Feature Film Award at the 1999 Animation Kobe.

Pioneer Entertainment released the film in North America on March 26, 2002 in both an edited Cardcaptors version and this uncut bilingual edition — presenting the film with original character names intact, both the Nelvana English dub and Japanese audio with English subtitles. Discotek Media later released a remastered subtitle-only DVD and Blu-ray on September 30, 2014.
