Each game takes place at different points in the series timeline, featuring new protagonists who battle Dracula’s forces using a combination of melee weapons, magic systems, and exploration-based progression.
In Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, players follow Soma Cruz, a young man with the ability to absorb the souls of defeated monsters. After the defeat of Dracula, a cult seeks to resurrect him, forcing Soma to once again confront his connection to dark powers.
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin centers on Jonathan Morris and Charlotte Aulin during World War II, who explore paintings that serve as alternate dimensions while confronting Dracula’s servants.
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia introduces Shanoa, a member of an organization formed to fight Dracula in his absence, who uses magical glyphs embedded into her body to wield weapons and spells.
All three games use a side-scrolling exploration format, often referred to as "Metroidvania" style. Players navigate large, interconnected maps where progress is gated by key abilities or items. Defeating enemies and uncovering hidden rooms expands the maps further, with each title featuring a variety of castle areas, thematic environments, and bosses that must be defeated to advance.
