The war against the Gaz Empire is over. Emperor Arthur Gaz is dead — killed by a coalition of heroes — and his body was cut into pieces and distributed among those heroes as trophies of their victory. Without a war to fight, soldiers and saboteurs have been left without purpose in a world that no longer needs their skills. Toru Acura is a twenty-year-old retired saboteur drifting through unemployment when he encounters Chaika Trabant in the forest: a white-haired girl in Gothic Lolita dress, carrying an enormous coffin on her back, speaking in halting broken sentences, and wielding a massive sniper rifle that runs on magic. Chaika claims to be Emperor Gaz's daughter, and she is collecting the pieces of her father's scattered body for proper burial. Or something. Toru and his adoptive sister Akari join her — Akari because she is paid, Toru because he wants to feel useful again. What they discover is that Chaika is not the only girl carrying a coffin and collecting the emperor's remains. There are multiple Chaikas. Some are red-haired. Some are working for different factions entirely. The question of who the original Chaika is — and what the remains are actually for — becomes more complicated the closer they get to the answer.
