Chocobo’s Dungeon 2 - PlayStation 1

Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is a roguelike RPG for the PlayStation developed and published by Square, released in North America on December 17, 1999. It holds the distinction of being the first Mystery Dungeon title to reach the West. The game follows Chocobo and his moogle companion Mog on a treasure-hunting expedition that goes sideways almost immediately. After Mog's recklessness triggers a dungeon collapse and destroys the home of white mage Shiroma, the group takes shelter with her Aunt Bomb while Chocobo works to make things right. When Shiroma is kidnapped, Chocobo sets out to rescue her with help from the eccentric inventor Cid.

The dungeons are randomly generated each run, built from recurring monster types and layouts that shift every time you enter. Combat is turn-based with movement and attacks possible in eight directions. Claws and saddles serve as weapons and armor and can be combined in stoves to produce stronger equipment. Feathers augment your actions and can summon powerful allies including Titan, Sylph, Ramuh, and Bahamut. Death sends you back to town and costs your carried items, but anything stored in rented town storage survives. Mog, Shiroma, and Cid can accompany Chocobo into dungeons and be controlled by a second player or left to the AI.

The overworld surrounding the dungeons changes as the story advances, with a coastal village, a forest, a swamp, and Snow Mountain serving as landmarks around Cid's ivy-covered tower. After the credits roll, a post-game mode opens up revisitable dungeons with a partner, including a 30-level secret dungeon not accessible during the main story.

Produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi with music by Kenji Ito.

PS1 games are region-locked. This is a North American copy and requires a North American PlayStation or a modified unit to play.
