xxxHOLiC is a darkly elegant supernatural fantasy manga by CLAMP — serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine from 2003 to 2011 and one of the most atmospherically distinctive works in the collective's catalog.

Kimihiro Watanuki is a high school student tormented since birth by his ability to see spirits and supernatural creatures, which flock to him with an intensity he can't explain or escape. Relief comes from an unlikely source: Yūko Ichihara, a bewitchingly beautiful and perpetually sake-drinking witch who operates a mysterious shop that grants any wish — for a price commensurate with the wisher's desire. Yūko can rid Watanuki of his affliction, but the cost is his labor, indefinitely. And so begins his employment in a shop where every customer arrives carrying a habit, an obsession, or a spiritual wound that Watanuki — slowly, reluctantly, and with considerable shrieking — helps to resolve.

Where most CLAMP series lead with action or romance, xxxHOLiC leads with mood. The series is structured around standalone client vignettes — each one a small morality fable about addiction, denial, dependency, and the quiet ways people destroy themselves — woven around a slowly deepening mystery about Watanuki's origins and Yūko's true nature. CLAMP's art here is at its most elongated and stylized: figures rendered impossibly tall and willowy, compositions dominated by negative space and bold geometric pattern, and Yūko's elaborate kimono designs forming some of the most visually striking pages the collective ever produced. It is genuinely eerie in a way that sneaks up on you.

The series runs in deep parallel with Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle — the two were serialized simultaneously and share characters, plot threads, and a unified cosmology that converges dramatically in the later volumes, making a complete run of both series one of the most rewarding reading experiences in CLAMP's entire body of work. xxxHOLiC was one of the first four titles ever licensed by Del Rey Manga, helping launch one of the most respected manga imprints of the 2000s. It was adapted into a 37-episode anime series by Production I.G., two OVAs, and a live-action TV drama in 2013.
