Dante's Inferno — Divine Edition for the PlayStation 3 is a third-person action game developed by Visceral Games — the studio behind Dead Space — based loosely on the Inferno canticle of Dante Alighieri's 14th-century epic poem The Divine Comedy. The game reimagines Dante as a Templar knight returning from the Crusades to find his beloved Beatrice murdered and her soul dragged into Hell by Lucifer himself. Armed with Death's scythe — seized after slaying Death at the gates — and guided by the spirit of the poet Virgil, Dante descends through all nine circles of Hell in pursuit of Beatrice, battling the damned and Hell's most monstrous guardians along the way.
Each of the nine circles — Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, and Treachery — is rendered as a distinct environment with its own visual identity, enemy types, and boss encounters drawn directly from Alighieri's vivid descriptions. Combat is fast and fluid at a locked 60 frames per second, with Death's scythe handling wide sweeping combos and Beatrice's Holy Cross providing ranged magical attacks. A moral choice system runs throughout the game: defeated sinners and souls can be absolved for Holy experience or punished for Unholy experience, with each path unlocking different upgrade trees.
Large-scale beast encounters allow Dante to tame certain monsters mid-battle and turn their power against Hell's own minions. A deep upgrade system lets players customize abilities across both upgrade paths, and the game's set-piece boss battles against figures like Cleopatra, King Minos, and Lucifer himself are among the most memorable in the action genre of its era.
Developed by Visceral Games and published by EA, Dante's Inferno released on February 9, 2010. The PS3-exclusive Divine Edition includes: the full game, a downloadable digital version of the game, a download code for the Trials of St. Lucia expansion, and exclusive videos. Built on the same engine as Dead Space and running at 60fps throughout, it remains one of the most stylistically ambitious action games of the PS3 era.
