Darius Twin - Super Nintendo

Darius Twin for the Super Nintendo is a horizontal shoot-'em-up developed and published by Taito — the first Darius game ever made exclusively for a home console, and one of the SNES launch titles in North America in 1991. The evil Belser Alliance has attacked the planet Darius, and two ace pilots of the Galactic Federation climb into their Silver Hawk fighters to stop them. The "Twin" in the title refers to simultaneous two-player co-op — a defining feature of the game and one of the very few horizontal shooters on the SNES to support it. Each player controls their own Silver Hawk with separate lives, and both players can upgrade their ships independently across the run.

Five color-coded power-up types are collected from square-shaped enemies approaching from front and behind — pink powers up the main weapon, green upgrades the side weapons, blue regenerates and improves the force shield, orange grants an extra life, and yellow destroys all enemies on screen instantly. A unique power-up mechanic distinguishes Darius Twin from its contemporaries: after dying with a sufficient number of upgrades collected, most power-ups remain with the ship rather than being lost entirely — softening the death penalty and keeping the game from becoming unfair after a bad run. A red item toggles the main weapon between the Darius and Darius II shot styles. Boss encounters at the end of each of the game's seven stages feature the series' trademark giant sea creature designs — a mechanical whale, a colossal lobster, and others — each with multiple attack phases and distinct weak points.

Computer and Video Games awarded it 88% on launch. Complex ranked it 56th on their Best Super Nintendo Games of All Time list. Advertised alongside Super Mario World and F-Zero at launch, Darius Twin was one of Taito's flagship SNES investments and remains the go-to recommendation for players who want two-player simultaneous co-op in a horizontal shmup on the platform.
