Dark Savior - JP Sega Saturn

Dark Savior for the Sega Saturn is one of the most genuinely singular games ever made for the platform — an isometric action-RPG from Climax Entertainment, the team behind Landstalker, set in a Salvador Dalí-meets-Möbius world of mutant talking animals, nonsensical architecture, and bizarre philosophy. Garian, a bounty hunter, is assigned to escort a monstrous prisoner named Bilan across the sea to a remote island prison. When the ship is attacked and Bilan escapes, Garian pursues him into the island's depths — and what begins as a manhunt unravels into something far stranger involving parallel worlds, fate, and the question of whether any choice is truly free.

The game blends isometric platforming, puzzle-solving, and one-on-one Street Fighter-style combat into a single experience — three genres that have no business working together and somehow do. Climax built their own 3D engine from scratch in assembly, creating fully polygonal environments with large 2D character sprites on top, and added a fully rotatable real-time camera that solved the notorious blind-platforming problem that plagued their own Landstalker. Combat encounters are rare and weighty — each enemy can only be fought once, making every battle feel like a mini-boss.

The game's defining feature is its Parallel System. How well the player performs in the frantic opening sequence determines which of five distinct story routes — Parallels — they enter, each with different characters, events, and endings. The full picture of the story only emerges across multiple playthroughs. Hardcore Gaming 101 called it "an early game of postmodern storytelling" and praised its Saturn-native synth-rock score as among the best on the platform. MobyGames ranks it #58 on the Saturn and gives it an 81% critic score.

Released in Japan on August 30, 1996 and in North America the same year, Dark Savior was later released in PAL regions in February 1997. This is the Japanese import disc — the Japanese version is functionally identical to the Western release in terms of gameplay. The Sega Saturn is region-locked and this disc will only play on a Japanese Sega Saturn or a region-free modded unit.
