Deadly Premonition - Xbox 360

Deadly Premonition for the Xbox 360 is an open-world survival horror game developed by Access Games and directed by Hidetaka "Swery" Suehiro, set in the small logging town of Greenvale, Washington, where the body of a young woman named Anna Graham has been found brutally murdered. FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan arrives to investigate, accompanied by an imaginary friend named Zach who he addresses openly in conversation throughout the game. The murder connects to a supernatural force that has been preying on the town for decades, and York's investigation draws him deeper into the lives of Greenvale's deeply eccentric residents as a second killer strikes.

The game blends open-world exploration, driving, survival horror combat, and detective investigation into a structure that functions somewhat like Twin Peaks played as a Shenmue game. York drives between locations on a real-time clock, interviews suspects and witnesses, searches crime scenes for clues, and spends time between story chapters interacting with the town's residents in side quests and optional activities. The Other World sections pull York into a nightmare dimension for linear combat sequences against ghostly enemies. Time passing affects York's hunger, energy, and hygiene meters. Combat is mechanically rudimentary and widely acknowledged as the weakest part of the experience.

Deadly Premonition received famously polarized reviews on release, with scores ranging from 2/10 to 10/10 depending on how much the reviewer valued its extraordinary writing and atmosphere against its dated technical execution. Gameblog called it "the unlikely meeting of Shenmue, Silent Hill and GTA, in a Twin Peaks setting." It became a cult phenomenon, earned a Guinness World Record for "most critically polarizing survival horror game," and was followed by Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise on Nintendo Switch in 2020.
