Death Bringer - Mega CD

Death Bringer: The Knight of Darkness for the Sega Mega CD is a party-based dungeon crawler RPG developed by Opera House and published by Riot — a Japan-exclusive Mega CD release that represents the most refined and feature-complete version of a game that originated on Japanese home computers in 1988. A powerful wizard has seized an ancient grimoire of limitless dark power known as the Death Bringer, and now commands armies of demons across the land. A nameless hero leaves his home village of Soron, gathers companions, and sets out to confront the forces of darkness.

Despite its Japanese origins, Death Bringer plays more like a Western dungeon crawler than a traditional JRPG — closer in spirit to Wizardry and Bard's Tale than to Dragon Quest. Exploration takes place in first-person pseudo-3D maze-like environments, with enemies visible on the exploration screen before battle initiates — giving players a moment to prepare rather than triggering random encounters. Combat itself takes place on a separate top-down field where heroes and enemies maneuver across the arena.

The Mega CD version is the definitive release of the game, adding an animated opening cinematic, animated cutscenes throughout, and a convenient auto-mapping feature absent from earlier computer and PC Engine versions — a welcome addition in a game built around dense labyrinthine dungeons.

Published in Japan on April 17, 1992, Death Bringer was never released outside Japan in any form and has never been officially localized into English. This is a Japan-import disc. The Mega CD is region-locked and this disc will only play on a Japanese Mega CD or Sega CD unit, or a region-free modded system. All text and menus are in Japanese.
