Deception IV: Blood Ties - Playstation 3

Deception IV: Blood Ties for the PlayStation 3 is a trap-based strategy game from Tecmo Koei and a revival of the Deception series, which had gone dormant for nearly a decade. Players take on the role of Laegrinna, a fragment of the Devil's soul given physical form, whose father has been sealed away by twelve Saints using sacred artifacts called the Holy Verses. To resurrect him, Laegrinna must recover all twelve pieces of the Holy Verses from the descendants of those saints, one by one. She is accompanied by three demonic servants who represent different schools of cruelty: Veruza, who favors Sadistic Torment; Caelea, who pursues Elaborate Death; and Lilia, who specializes in Humiliating Demise.

Laegrinna cannot fight directly. Instead, she lures human enemies into rooms rigged with traps and sets them off with carefully timed sequences. Over 100 trap types are available across three categories that correspond to the three servants, ranging from rolling boulders, spike walls, pitfalls, and iron maidens to spring boards, human cannons, and banana peels. The real depth comes from chaining traps together: launching an enemy into the air with a springboard and then catching them with a swinging pendulum earns far more points than simple single-trap kills. Enemies have different resistances, movement patterns, and weaknesses, and understanding these is essential to designing effective trap sequences. A chain attack bonus system rewards increasingly elaborate setups.

Developed by Tecmo Koei and published in North America on March 25, 2014, Deception IV marked the series' first entry in nine years following 2005's Trapt on PS2. GameFAQs users rated it Good. The Otaku's Study called it "an unapologetic puzzle-strategy mash-up" and a solid entry point for new players. A follow-up expansion, Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess, added a second playable character and additional missions in 2015.
