Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax for the PlayStation 3 is a 2D crossover fighting game developed by Ecole and French Bread, featuring characters from light novels published under Kadokawa's Dengeki Bunko imprint, set against stages drawn from Sega's own game franchises. The story involves a mysterious entity called Zetsumu draining the life from fictional worlds, and a being called Denshin who summons fighters from across the Dengeki Bunko universe to stop him. The roster pulls from some of the most popular anime adaptations of the past decade: Kirito and Asuka from Sword Art Online, Mikoto Misaka from A Certain Scientific Railgun, Shizuo Heiwajima from Durarara!!, Taiga Aisaka from Toradora!, Shana from Shakugan no Shana, and more. Akira Yuki from Virtua Fighter and Selvaria Bles from Valkyria Chronicles serve as unlockable Sega guest characters.
Matches use a 2-on-1 system: each player selects a main character and an assist character drawn from a separate pool of 23 support fighters, which includes additional Dengeki Bunko figures like Sadao Maou from The Devil Is a Part-Timer! and Izaya Orihara from Durarara!!. The Climax Gauge fuels EX special moves and the powerful Climax Arts super attacks, while a Reflection Guard lets players absorb and redirect opponent pressure. Trump Cards earned upon losing a round provide comeback tools unique to each character. Stage backgrounds are built from Sega properties, with arenas based on Sonic the Hedgehog's Green Hill Zone, NiGHTS into Dreams, and other series, scored by matching franchise music.
Originally released in Japanese arcades in 2014, Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax was brought to PS3 and PS Vita in North America by Sega on October 6, 2015, and includes an Arcade Mode exclusive to the Western release. Cross-save between PS3 and PS Vita versions is supported. A follow-up, Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition, was released in Japan in 2015 but never localized. Push Square noted the game's appeal was strongest for existing Dengeki Bunko fans, calling it "a Dengeki Bunko follower's dream."
