Digimon Story: Time Stranger for Xbox Series X is the seventh mainline entry in the beloved Digimon Story series — releasing eight years after Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker's Memory and serving as the long-awaited true successor to the fan-favorite Cyber Sleuth duology. Set in Tokyo, Japan, the story follows an agent of a secret organization who encounters an unknown creature shortly before a catastrophic city-leveling explosion — and then reawakens eight years in the past. Trapped in a timeline before the disaster, the protagonist must team up with new human and Digimon allies to uncover the origins of the catastrophe, untangle a conspiracy that spans multiple parallel worlds and time periods, and ultimately find a way to change the future before history repeats itself. The game is set in the same universe as Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory, taking place in a different timeline — meaning returning fans will find familiar connective tissue while newcomers can jump in with no prior knowledge required.

Time Stranger retains the 3-on-3 turn-based combat and the core loop of Digivolving and De-Digivolving partners from Cyber Sleuth, while introducing a suite of new systems that deepen the formula considerably. The new Digimon Personalities system gives each Digimon one of 16 distinct personality types — such as "Daring" or "Adoring" — which influence stat growth, skill acquisition, and Digivolution conditions, adding a layer of character to the roster that goes beyond simple stat optimization. Inherited skills can now be unequipped from a Digimon and transferred to another as an item — a quality-of-life improvement over Cyber Sleuth that makes team building significantly more flexible. Rather than random encounters, Time Stranger uses symbol encounters — enemy Digimon roam dungeons visibly and contact triggers battle — and a new Convert system lets players scan wild Digimon in battle, creating them from data once scan rate reaches 100%. Over 450 Digimon are available to collect, raise, and battle — the largest roster in the series' history — and this is the first game in the Story series to include a full English dub.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger was developed by Media.Vision and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, releasing worldwide on October 3, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows. The game sold over one million copies by December 12, 2025 — a landmark milestone for the franchise. Kotaku's preview reviewer stated "I don't care about Digimon, and I'm still hyped for Digimon Story: Time Stranger", while CNET called the combat system "exactly what hardcore RPG fans have been waiting for" and praised the "expansive possibilities" of Digimon team building. The soundtrack was composed by Masafumi Takada, marking his return to the series, and a large-scale DLC expansion was announced for 2027 at Digimon Con 2026. A Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 version is scheduled for July 10, 2026, but the Xbox Series X version released seven months earlier and remains the definitive physical console release for players who want to experience the game now.
