In Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, you play as a young boy from the isolated island of Estard who discovers that the world was once a vast archipelago before being systematically erased from time.
The gameplay follows an episodic, "slow-burn" structure where you travel to the past using magical stone shards to solve the local crises of missing islands, which then causes them to reappear in the present day for exploration.
This 3DS remake modernizes the classic formula by replacing random encounters with visible enemies and streamlining the infamously long intro, while retaining the deep Vocation system that allows your party to master over 30 different human and monster character classes. It is a grand, hundred-hour journey centered on the themes of restoration, historical mystery, and the ultimate battle against the Demon King, Orgodemir.
