Crimson Tears - PS2

Crimson Tears for the PlayStation 2 is a cel-shaded sci-fi beat-'em-up developed by DreamFactory — the studio behind Ehrgeiz and The Bouncer — and published by Capcom, set in Tokyo in the year 2049. A mysterious catastrophe has twisted the city's infrastructure into a shifting dimensional labyrinth, and three bio-engineered weapons created by the weapons corporation A.R.M.A. are the only ones capable of fighting through it. Players choose from Amber, a calm samurai-type who wields twin blades; Kadie, a heavy weapons specialist with massive mechanical arms; or Tokio, a gunslinger with high speed and ranged firepower. Each has distinct combat stats, movement speed, and weapon affinities suited to different play styles.

Gameplay is a dungeon crawler where the labyrinth reshapes itself around the player's progress, creating an ever-shifting series of combat floors to clear on the way to each boss. The heat system is the core survival challenge: fighting and moving continuously raises the character's body temperature until they enter meltdown, a berserk state that drains health rapidly if cooling items are not used in time. Over 120 weapon types are collectible from the environment and enemies, and loose parts can be combined at a workshop in the hub city to forge new equipment. Between runs, players can donate money to fund the city's recovery, which expands available shop inventory over time.

A post-game bonus dungeon unlocks after clearing the main campaign, and finding cloth pieces hidden throughout allows an NPC to craft costumes based on Capcom characters including Ryu and Chun-Li from Street Fighter. Developed by DreamFactory and published by Capcom in North America on July 21, 2004. Hardcore Gaming 101 called it DreamFactory's last original IP before the studio moved to manga adaptations and budget titles, making this a notable final chapter for the team behind Ehrgeiz.
