Etrian Odyssey for the Nintendo DS is a punishingly difficult and deeply rewarding first-person dungeon-crawling RPG that revives the spirit of classic PC dungeon crawlers and makes them feel completely at home on the DS.
Set in the frontier town of Etria, rumors have spread of a mysterious crack in the vast forest at the town's edge — a gaping maw leading downward into a seemingly endless labyrinth.
Players build their own adventuring guild from scratch, assembling a party of up to five characters drawn from nine distinct classes including the woodland Survivalist, the shield-bearing Protector, the whip-wielding Dark Hunter, and more — each with a deep skill tree to develop over dozens of hours.
What makes Etrian Odyssey truly unique is its mandatory mapmaking system: the top screen shows the first-person dungeon action while the bottom touch screen displays a blank grid — and it is entirely the player's responsibility to draw their own maps using the stylus, marking walls, doors, treasure chests, staircases, and enemy locations by hand. Since the only way out of the labyrinth is to retrace your steps back to the entrance, poor mapmaking can be genuinely fatal.
The game is notorious for its brutal difficulty — random encounters are relentless, FOEs (powerful overworld enemies visible on the map) patrol set paths and will destroy an underprepared party, and death is permanent for any fallen guild member who isn't revived quickly.
A landmark Atlus DS release, Etrian Odyssey spawned a beloved long-running franchise and has since been remastered as Etrian Odyssey HD for Nintendo Switch and PC.
