Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight for the Nintendo 3DS is essentially two complete games in one cartridge — a fully rebuilt and enhanced version of Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard for the DS, plus an entirely new story-driven experience exclusive to this release. Set in the flooded Grand Duchy of High Lagaard, ruled by a duke rumored to be descended from a legendary chosen bloodline, a national crisis sends a call out to all explorers willing to brave the towering Yggdrasil Labyrinth and retrieve the mythical Grail of Kings.
Classic Mode preserves the original Etrian Odyssey II experience with full character customization, the series' signature hand-drawn mapmaking on the touch screen, updated graphics, and redesigned dungeon layouts — playable across three difficulty levels including the beginner-friendly Picnic mode and the brutal Expert mode.
Story Mode is a brand-new narrative experience with a fixed party, full voice acting, animated cutscenes, and a deeply personal tale following the Fafnir Knight and Princess Arianna as they unravel the origin of a monstrous swordfighter named Fafnir. New to this entry is the Fafnir class — a unique character who can transform mid-battle into a powerful demonic form with dramatically enhanced abilities.
Food and cooking add another strategic layer, with over 70 types of forest cuisine that can be combined to unlock unique skills and effects, and a grimoire system lets characters gain and trade abilities discovered throughout the labyrinth. Data carries over freely between Classic and Story modes.
