Peepo Choo is a raucous, ultraviolent, and surprisingly sharp satirical manga written and illustrated by Felipe Smith — one of the first manga series ever created by a non-Japanese artist, originally serialized in Japanese by Kodansha and later translated into English by Smith himself for Vertical Inc. The story toggles between two worlds: Milton, a Black otaku teenager from Chicago's South Side who escapes his brutal neighborhood through his obsessive love of the in-universe anime Peepo Choo, dreaming of a Japan populated entirely by the wide-eyed, kawaii creatures he sees on screen; and Rockstar, a tattooed yakuza hitman operating in Tokyo's underworld who is equally and inexplicably obsessed with American hip-hop culture, convinced the United States is a nonstop action movie. When Milton finally wins a trip to Japan, both men's fantasies collide violently with the reality waiting on the other side.

Smith uses the premise to carve up cultural mythology from both directions with equal enthusiasm. The manga is loud, bloody, frequently explicit, and genuinely funny — but underneath the chaos is a real argument about projection, fandom, and what happens when people fall in love with an idea of a culture rather than the culture itself. Smith's art is a kinetic fusion of American alternative comics energy and manga draftsmanship, with krumping sequences rendered with the fluidity of animation, action scenes that hit like a freight train, and character designs that are immediately distinctive. The series escalates to an absolutely unhinged conclusion that somehow earns every bit of it.

The origin story of Peepo Choo is almost as wild as the manga itself. Born in Ohio, raised in Buenos Aires, and trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Smith cold-pitched Kodansha at San Diego Comic-Con in 2007 and moved to Tokyo the following year to begin serialization in Monthly Morning Two. His previous work MBQ had been published by TOKYOPOP to critical acclaim. A genuine one-of-a-kind artifact in manga history — part love letter, part takedown, and entirely its own thing.
