FireStriker for the Super Nintendo is one of the most genuinely original games in the console's library — a title that looks exactly like a fantasy RPG on the surface and plays like nothing else in the entire SNES catalog. Long ago, four kingdoms — Wind, Fire, Earth, and Water — competed for the Trialight, an elemental orb of fire created by the Arch-Mage Wylde. The Kingdom of Wind united the four tribes under a golden age of peace, but Wylde had a hidden purpose: he conjured four monsters to destroy all four kingdoms at once. Now Slader, the last FireStriker and the only warrior who can wield the Trialight, sets out alone to free the fallen kingdoms and destroy Wylde.
What makes FireStriker extraordinary is its mechanic. Despite the overhead Zelda-like presentation — heart meter, sword-wielding hero, RPG visual style — this is not an action RPG. The Trialight is a blazing ball of fire that behaves exactly like a pinball, and FireStriker is essentially a fantasy Breakout game. Slader freely walks across each overhead arena and strikes the Trialight with his sword to control its trajectory, bouncing it into enemies and destructible blocks to clear the stage. A secondary guardian character protects the bottom of the screen from the ball escaping — in two-player co-op, one player controls Slader while the other controls the goalkeeper, making this one of the most inventive co-op experiences on the platform. A VS mode pits two players against each other in a soccer-style match, each trying to score the Trialight through the other's goal.
