In the post-nuclear wasteland of the future, the warlord Lord Shin has conquered the city of Southern Cross through brutal force, enslaved its population, and stolen the woman Kenshiro loves — Julia. Kenshiro is the Fist of the North Star: a martial arts master trained in the ancient technique of Hokuto Shinken, which targets the body's vital pressure points to destroy opponents from within. Guided by the spirit of his dead master Ryuken, Kenshiro crosses the wasteland toward Southern Cross, fighting through Shin's enforcers — including the psychopathic Jackal and his gang — while connecting with a group of survivors trying to reach the city's water supply. The final confrontation between Kenshiro and Shin is as inevitable as everything leading to it.
Fist of the North Star is a 1995 American live-action adaptation of Buronson and Tetsuo Hara's landmark manga Hokuto no Ken, directed by Tony Randel and written by Peter Atkins. Produced on a budget of approximately $7 million and shot primarily in New Orleans, the film loosely adapts the Shin arc from the manga's early volumes. It features Gary Daniels as Kenshiro, Malcolm McDowell as Ryuken, Costas Mandylor as Lord Shin, and Chris Penn as Jackal — a renamed version of the manga's Jagi. Additional cast includes Melvin Van Peebles, Downtown Julie Brown, Dante Basco, Clint Howard, and professional wrestler Big Van Vader as Goliath. Stunt choreography was handled by Chad Stahelski and J.J. Perry — Stahelski would go on to direct the John Wick franchise.
The film received a direct-to-video release in the United States and a theatrical release in Japan on April 21, 1995 — the Japanese dub features the original anime voice cast including Akira Kamiya reprising Kenshiro, Toshio Furukawa as Shin, and Mie Suzuki as Julia. The DVD was released May 25, 2004 in anamorphic widescreen with English and Japanese audio. No official Blu-ray release has been produced as of 2025.
