Odin Sphere Leifthrasir for the PlayStation 4 is Vanillaware's definitive remake of their acclaimed 2007 PS2 action RPG, rebuilt from the ground up in full 1080p at 60 frames per second and with a comprehensively redesigned combat system. The story is framed as a series of storybooks discovered in an attic by a young girl named Alice, each one following a different protagonist across the warring kingdoms of Erion as the world edges toward its prophesied apocalypse. Five characters take turns as the lead across interlocking narratives: Gwendolyn, a Valkyrie princess fighting for her father's approval; Cornelius, a prince transformed into a Pooka rabbit who searches for his lost love; Mercedes, a fairy princess unexpectedly thrust into ruling her kingdom; Oswald, a shadow knight haunted by a debt to the underworld; and Velvet, a sorceress whose grandmother's curse may be the key to everything. Their stories overlap, contradict, and ultimately converge in a finale that draws all five together.

Each character plays differently, with distinct weapons, movement options, and alchemical abilities. Combat in Leifthrasir flows dramatically faster and more freely than the original game. Normal attacks no longer drain the POW meter, making aggressive play the standard rather than an occasional luxury. A new skill tree system lets players specialize each character's abilities, and the alchemy and cooking systems that govern healing and stat growth have been streamlined and made more accessible. New enemies and areas expand the original game's content. The result is one of the most fluid and kinetic action RPG combat systems on the platform.

Two modes are available from the start. Refined Mode is the full Leifthrasir remake with all new content, redesigned systems, and new scenes. Classic Mode allows players to experience the original 2007 PS2 version of the game with updated high-definition visuals but original mechanics, as a separate accessible option. Developed by Vanillaware and published by Atlus in North America on June 7, 2016. Push Square called it "a superb remake that oozes quality." The game holds a 90/100 on Metacritic.
