Freezing Blu-ray

In the near future, humanity is under assault from interdimensional alien beings called Nova — enormous, devastating entities that conventional military force cannot stop. The only effective counter is the Pandora program: young women with stigmata implanted in their bodies that allow them to generate Volt Weapons and deploy powerful Freezing fields that can immobilize Nova in combat. Each Pandora is partnered with a male Limiter — a boy who amplifies her abilities through a ritual called Baptism. Kazuya Aoi arrives at West Genetics Academy carrying the memory of his sister, a legendary Pandora who died defeating a Nova, and immediately crosses paths with Satellizer el Bridget — the most powerful third-year student at the academy, ranked second in the world, with an extensive record of assaulting male students who touch her, and an absolute refusal to take a Limiter partner. Kazuya, who resembles his late sister strongly enough to confuse Satellizer on their first meeting, becomes the only male student she will tolerate anywhere near her. The academy's ranked battles, faction politics, and the growing emotional weight of what Satellizer has survived make for a story considerably darker than its aggressive fan service framing initially suggests.

Freezing is a 12-episode action series produced by A.C.G.T., directed by Takashi Watanabe, and based on the Korean manhwa by Dal Young Im and Kwang Hyun Kim — making it one of the few anime adaptations of a Korean comic property. It aired on AT-X from January to April 2011 and is notable for the gap between its surface presentation — aggressive fan service, clothing destruction, and ecchi combat — and the genuine emotional depth of Satellizer's backstory, which the series builds toward and delivers with unexpected weight. The home video release presents the uncensored version, significantly different from the broadcast. Originally released in North America by FUNimation on a Limited Edition Blu-ray + DVD combo and a Standard Edition on February 14, 2012; FUNimation Anime Classics reissue followed February 21, 2017, and an Essentials reissue on March 19, 2019.
