Front Mission 3 for the PlayStation is the third mainline entry in Square's acclaimed mech tactical RPG series and the first to receive an official Western release. Set in 2112 in a near-future Earth where geopolitical tensions between the USN and OCU superpowers simmer constantly, the story follows Kazuki Takemura, a test pilot for the Kirashima Heavy Industries corporation, and his friend Ryogo. What begins as a routine assignment to transport an experimental wanzer — the game's term for military mecha — spirals into a vast conspiracy spanning multiple nations when the prototype is stolen. A branching early narrative decision gives players access to one of two complete storylines, each featuring different characters, events, and revelations about the same conspiracy from opposite sides.

The tactical battles play out on isometric grids where wanzers move, attack, and use skills in a turn-based sequence. Each wanzer consists of independently targetable body parts — arms, legs, the body, and the backpack — with different systems housed in each. Destroying an opponent's arm disables their weapons; destroying their legs grounds them. Pilots can be targeted directly and ejected from their machines, and a player's own pilot can eject to fight on foot or commandeer an enemy wanzer mid-battle. Skills are learned by equipping wanzer parts and using them in combat until a random chance procs the pilot's ability acquisition.

The game also features the W-ZERO computer network, an in-game internet accessible from save points that contains lore, side information, and item purchases, adding a distinctive layer of worldbuilding beyond the main missions. Developed and published by Square in North America on March 21, 2000. The game received a remake in June 2025 for modern platforms, but the original PS1 release remains the definitive physical version of one of the most underrated tactical RPGs in Square's catalog.
