Galerians: Ash for the PlayStation 2 is the direct sequel to the cult PS1 survival horror game Galerians — a sci-fi psychological horror game that sits at the intersection of Akira, Silent Hill, The Matrix, and Dark City. Six years after Rion — a genetically engineered boy with devastating psychic abilities — destroyed Dorothy, the rogue mother computer bent on replacing humanity with a superior race called Galerians, he is brought back to life by Lilia to face a final crisis. Before her destruction, Dorothy executed one last program: the Last Galerians, led by the powerful Ash, are now moving to finish what she started and annihilate all organic life on Earth. Rion must face them alone.

The gameplay blends survival horror exploration with a psychic combat system unlike anything else in the genre. Rather than conventional weapons, Rion fights using pharmaceutical drugs that trigger different psychic abilities — telekinesis, pyrokinesis, and others — injected directly into his nervous system. Using powers and sustaining damage raises an addiction meter, and when it maxes out, Rion's brain overloads in a "brainstorm" — a dangerous feedback loop that must be managed before it becomes fatal. Carefully balancing which drugs to use and when is the core survival challenge alongside environmental puzzles and boss encounters against the Last Galerians.

Ash shifts the tone of the original from horror toward pure science fiction — reviewers compared it to Digital Devil Saga visually, with clean, stark corridors replacing the gritty retro-sci-fi aesthetic of the PS1 game. HonestGamers praised its "deeper than it looks" existential plot and called the addiction system a meaningful improvement over the original. The game opens with a full synopsis of the PS1 Galerians — helpful for newcomers, though the story is dense enough that playing the first game is strongly recommended.
