In the aftermath of a catastrophic betrayal that shatters the Getter Team and plunges the world into chaos, humanity stands on the brink of extinction. Dr. Saotome — once one of humanity’s greatest scientific minds and co-creator of the Getter Robo project — has resurfaced years after being presumed dead, now commanding an apocalyptic campaign against Earth with armies of grotesque biomechanical creatures and a fortress capable of annihilating entire cities. Accused of murdering Professor Saotome years earlier, Ryoma Nagare escapes imprisonment when the world once again requires the power of Getter Robo. Reunited with fellow pilots Hayato Jin and Benkei Kuruma, Ryoma returns to battle aboard the Shin Getter Robo — an overwhelmingly powerful machine fueled by the mysterious and potentially sentient Getter Rays. But the conflict rapidly spirals beyond a conventional war. As alien invasions, evolutionary horrors, and internal conspiracies emerge, humanity is forced to confront the terrifying possibility that Getter energy itself may represent the next stage of evolution — one utterly indifferent to human survival.
Getter Robo: Armageddon is a 1998–1999 original video animation series directed initially by Yasuhiro Imagawa and later by Jun Kawagoe, produced by Bandai Visual, Brain's Base, and Dynamic Productions. Created as a dark reimagining of Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa’s classic Getter Robo franchise, the OVA abandons the lighter superhero tone of earlier incarnations in favor of large-scale apocalyptic warfare, cosmic horror, and hyper-stylized mechanical action. Combining elements from multiple Getter Robo manga continuities — particularly Getter Robo Go and Getter Robo Arc — the series became one of the most influential super robot OVAs of its era. Its frenetic animation, aggressive directing, and explosive mechanical combat helped redefine Getter Robo for modern audiences while preserving the franchise’s themes of evolution, sacrifice, and humanity’s dangerous pursuit of power.
The OVA developed a major cult following both in Japan and internationally through VHS fansubs, DVD releases, and repeated appearances in the Super Robot Wars game series.
