On October 10, a terrorist incident changed the world. A scientist named Terumichi Madoka — also known as Enkidu — detonated a device at the excavation site of the ancient tomb of Gilgamesh in Uruk, flooding the atmosphere with a psychic energy called Dynamis and permanently altering the sky into a vast mirror that reflects the earth below. Civilization has never fully recovered. Into this fractured world come Tatsuya and Fuko, a teenage brother and sister running from debt collectors after their mother's suicide, who stumble into a conflict between two factions: Orga, a small group of psychic children living in the Hotel Providence under the care of a mysterious wealthy widow known only as the Countess, who can channel Dynamis to reshape reality; and Gilgamesh, a cadre of beautiful, leather-clad figures who transform into winged creatures of terrifying power and serve the will of Enkidu, who survived his own explosion. Both factions want the siblings. What they represent to the ancient struggle playing out around them is the central mystery — and the answer, when it comes, is not comforting.

Gilgamesh is a 26-episode psychological dark fantasy series produced by Ishimori Entertainment and animated by Group TAC and Japan Vistec, directed by Masahiko Murata in his debut, and based on Shotaro Ishinomori's manga serialized in Weekly Shonen King from 1976 to 1978. Ishinomori — whose credits include Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Cyborg 009, and 008's manga adaptation — is one of the most prolific manga artists in history, and Gilgamesh represents one of his darker and more philosophically ambitious works, drawing from the ancient Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh and structured around questions of humanity, divinity, and whether civilization deserves to be saved. The score was composed by Kaoru Wada — whose credits include the City Hunter films, Inuyasha films, Puppet Princess, and the Gilgamesh TV series — and incorporates Beethoven's Emperor Concerto and the hymn "Shall We Gather by the River" as recurring thematic pieces. The series aired on Kansai TV from October 2, 2003 to March 18, 2004. ADV Films released the series in North America on seven individual DVD volumes from June 21, 2005 to March 21, 2006; Vol. 1 includes a collector's artbox. A Complete Collection 5-disc set followed October 17, 2006 and a Thinpak edition May 22, 2007.
