Gunblade NY and L.A. Machineguns: Arcade Hits Pack for the Nintendo Wii brings two of Sega's most obscure 1990s arcade on-rails shooters to home consoles for the first time in a single budget compilation. Both games were developed by Sega AM3 and share a connected storyline involving an android terrorist organization called SIFAT that launches coordinated attacks on American cities. In Gunblade NY, players man the mounted gun of a military helicopter defending New York City against the initial invasion. In L.A. Machineguns, the action moves to Los Angeles and West Coast locations including Alcatraz, Yosemite, and Las Vegas, where players ride a futuristic hovering gunship against the next wave.
Both games are pure on-rails shooting experiences. The Wii Remote's infrared pointer controls the targeting reticle, with the B trigger firing and the A button switching between two firing modes: a rapid-fire option for light targets and a heavier concentrated fire for armored enemies. (cite index="92-1">The Wii version adds online leaderboards for worldwide ranking and the ability to unlock new firing styles with different tactical advantages beyond the original arcade releases. A score attack mode sets tight time limits for competitive high-score runs, and both games support two-player simultaneous co-op. Wii Zapper compatibility is built in for players who have the peripheral.
(cite index="88-1">Despite the transition from the arcade's positional gun system to the Wii's IR tracking, reviewers noted the accuracy was not lost in the conversion, and the fundamental shooting gameplay of both games holds up well. Gunblade NY shows its 1995 Model 2 arcade origins in its visuals, while L.A. Machineguns' 1998 Model 3 roots give it a noticeably sharper presentation. Developed by Sega AM3 and published by Sega for Wii in North America on August 30, 2010 at a budget price point. The two original arcade games have never been made available on any digital platform, making this Wii disc the only home release either game has received.
