Hidenori Matsubara Art Works (松原秀典イラストワークス) is the debut personal illustration collection from Hidenori Matsubara, one of anime's most accomplished character designers and animators. Published by Ichijinsha in 2010, this 142-page full-color artbook collects 172 illustrations spanning Matsubara's career across some of the most beloved anime properties of the 1990s and 2000s — including Ah! My Goddess, Sakura Wars, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Gungrave, Rurouni Kenshin, and Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. The book is presented almost entirely in full color, with a smaller section of black-and-white illustrations and approximately ten pages of background commentary, and comes in a large-format softcover with dust jacket.
Matsubara joined Gainax in 1988 and worked as an animator on Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water and Neon Genesis Evangelion before leaving to work as a freelancer. He served as character designer and animation director on the 1995 Oh My Goddess! OVA series and its 2000 theatrical film, creating the definitive animated versions of Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld that fans of the franchise still associate with the franchise today. His work on Sakura Wars and Gankutsuou further cemented his reputation as one of the most technically refined and visually elegant character designers working in the industry. Art Works is the definitive showcase of that career in a single volume — an essential piece for collectors who have followed Matsubara's work across multiple franchises.
