After the resolution of Kai, the five OVA episodes of Rei return to Hinamizawa for a mix of tones: comedy omake episodes featuring the cast in lighter situations, and two more serious episodes — particularly the Saikoroshi arc, which poses a quietly devastating question to Rika: if she could return to a world where the tragedy never happened, a world where everyone she loves is alive and happy and the horror never began, would she? What would she have to give up? What would it cost? The Saikoroshi arc is, for many fans, the most emotionally concentrated piece of writing in the entire Higurashi franchise.

Higurashi: When They Cry — Rei is a five-episode OVA series produced by Studio Deen, directed by Toshifumi Kawase, and released in Japan from February 25 to September 30, 2009. The score was composed by Kenji Kawai. Episodes 1, 3, and 5 are comedy omake; episodes 2 and 4 form the Saikoroshi arc. Sentai Filmworks released Rei in North America — the first time it received any English subtitled release — alongside Kai in 2016. Subtitle only, no English dub. The Rei Blu-ray was released July 26, 2016 by Sentai Filmworks.
