Johnny Joestar, a paraplegic former horse-racing prodigy who has lost his fame and the use of his legs, discovers a mysterious, rotating energy called the "Spin". Possessing a newfound determination to regain his mobility, Johnny pairs up with Gyro Zeppeli, a enigmatic disgraced executioner from the Kingdom of Naples who has mastered the Spin. Together, they enter the Steel Ball Run—a grueling, 3,700-mile cross-country horse race spanning the 1890s American frontier with a $50 million grand prize. However, the race quickly reveals itself to be a cover operation organized by U.S. President Funny Valentine to locate and assemble the scattered pieces of a sacred, divine artifact known as the Holy Corpse. Johnny, Gyro, and rival racers clash using evolving Stand abilities and mastery of spatial geometry, turning a sporting event into a high-stakes battle over destiny, morality, and global control.

Steel Ball Run shifts the franchise into an alternate continuity, blending Western themes, historical fiction, intense tactical combat, and Araki's most refined, complex artistic work.

Notes About Hirohiko Araki

Araki launched Steel Ball Run as a reboot of the series' universe, allowing him to explore new themes of personal redemption, growth, and moral ambiguity without being bound by the original Joestar bloodline history. Moving serialization from a weekly shōnen format to a monthly seinen magazine allowed Araki to experiment with denser narratives, intricate panel layouts, mature themes, and realistic figure drawing. Araki entered the manga industry independently after winning a Tezuka Award honorable mention.
