Yuri Otani is an anxious elementary school student who desperately wants a normal life, but fate has other plans when she's reluctantly elected to the school's Alien Party—a group of girls tasked with capturing the bizarre extraterrestrial creatures that routinely invade campus. Armed with living symbiotic creatures called Borgs that attach themselves to their heads for protection and combat, Yuri and her classmates Kumi Kawamura and Kasumi Tomine struggle to balance ordinary childhood with the increasingly terrifying responsibility of confronting creatures far beyond human understanding.

What makes Alien Nine so memorable is its unique blend of cute character designs and deeply unsettling psychological horror. Rather than focusing on action or traditional science fiction, Tomizawa explores childhood anxiety, fear of growing up, and the crushing weight of responsibilities forced upon children before they're emotionally prepared. The alien designs are grotesque, imaginative, and often disturbingly organic, while the story constantly blurs the line between coming-of-age drama and cosmic body horror. Beneath its deceptively simple premise lies an emotionally complex meditation on trauma, isolation, and reluctant acceptance.

Released during the early 2000s, Alien Nine quickly earned a reputation as one of manga's most distinctive cult science fiction series. Its unconventional storytelling and haunting atmosphere helped it stand apart from more traditional alien invasion stories, while its striking visual style influenced later creators blending horror with "cute" aesthetics. The manga was adapted into a four-episode OVA series in 2001, which faithfully captured the eerie tone of Tomizawa's artwork but covered only a portion of the story. Central Park Media published the complete English-language edition between 2003 and 2004, making complete sets increasingly difficult to find following the publisher's closure.
