Hotel Dusk: Room 215 for the Nintendo DS is one of the most atmospheric and distinctive adventure games ever made for a handheld system. Players take on the role of Kyle Hyde, a brooding ex-New York cop turned travelling salesman who checks into Hotel Dusk — a rundown hotel in the middle of nowhere — on a routine delivery job that quickly unravels into something far more personal. As the night unfolds, the secrets of the hotel's eccentric guests begin to surface, and Kyle finds himself drawn into mysteries tied to his own troubled past, including the disappearance of his former partner. The game is played with the DS held sideways like a book, with the touch screen used to navigate a top-down view of the hotel and the top screen displaying a first-person perspective of Kyle's surroundings. Interaction is handled almost entirely through the stylus, and puzzles make inventive use of the DS hardware including the touch screen, microphone, and even the act of closing the clamshell lid. The game's visuals are rendered in a striking hand-drawn sketchy style, giving it the feel of a noir graphic novel. Featured in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die, Hotel Dusk remains a cult classic and one of the most mature, story-driven experiences on the platform.
