Ikari Warriors III: The Rescue for the NES is the third and final entry in SNK's Ikari Warriors trilogy — and a radical departure from its predecessors. Where the first two games were top-down run-and-gun shooters, The Rescue ditches the guns almost entirely and reinvents itself as a beat-'em-up. A shadowy organization called Crime Ghost has kidnapped the President's daughter Elise and is threatening to execute her unless the President resigns. He turns to the only two soldiers he trusts: Paul and Vince, the Ikari Warriors. Players fight through six stages of enemy-packed environments — docks, jungles, temples — brawling their way to the Crime Ghost mastermind Faust.
Hand-to-hand combat is the primary tool — punches, roundhouse kicks, and jump kicks each deal different amounts of damage and have distinct ranges. Machine guns can be picked up from downed enemies for a limited burst of firepower, and vehicle bosses are fought exclusively with guns in sections that briefly restore the run-and-gun feel of the earlier games. The NES version makes several meaningful improvements over the arcade: the brutal time limit mechanic is removed entirely, the anime-style character redesigns are more expressive than the arcade's Rambo-inspired originals, and an exclusive fourth scuba-diving side-scrolling shooter stage is unique to this version. Unlimited continues respawn players at the same spot, making the game completable by determined players regardless of skill level.
Developed and published by SNK, Ikari Warriors III: The Rescue released on NES in North America in 1990. It is the final chapter of the Ikari Warriors series.
