Interstate '76 is a vehicular combat game developed by LTI Gray Matter and published by Activision, set in an alternate 1976 America where a national oil crisis has collapsed the federal government and turned the roads of the American Southwest into lawless danger zones patrolled by armed gangs in heavily modified muscle cars. Players take on the role of Groove Champion, a skilled auto-vigilante whose sister Jade is found murdered in a junkyard, and who sets out across the desert wastes of West Texas with his afro'd, poetry-writing partner Taurus and a rolling arsenal of weaponized vintage American iron to find her killer and expose a conspiracy that goes far deeper than a simple roadside killing. The game's visual style is pure 1970s blaxploitation fever dream — big polygons, big hair, big cars, and a funk soundtrack so aggressively authentic that PC Gamer awarded it Special Achievement in Music and called it "the most original action game released in a decade."
Gameplay is a blend of vehicular combat simulation and story-driven mission design across 17 scripted single-player missions set in open-ended, trackless desert environments. Players equip their car with a customizable loadout of weapons — machine guns, turrets, grenade launchers, mines, and more — and engage enemy "creepers" with a damage model that tracks armor on each facing of the vehicle independently, meaning hits from the front, rear, and sides all have different consequences. Car handling and collision physics aim for realism despite the fantastical setting, giving the combat genuine tactical weight. An instant Melee mode supports up to eight players in head-to-head vehicular carnage, and the pre-rendered cinematic cutscenes — described by reviewers as Starsky and Hutch meets Pulp Fiction — were recognized at the inaugural Interactive Achievement Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound and Music.
Released on March 28, 1997, Interstate '76 was a runner-up for Computer Gaming World's Action Game of the Year — losing only to Quake II — and won CGW's Artistic Achievement Award outright. PC Gamer ranked it the 26th best computer game ever made in 1998. It was included in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die. In an extraordinary promotional stunt, specially marked big boxes shipped from Electronics Boutique contained a golden key that could win a real-life Interstate '76 muscle car — one of the most extravagant video game promotions in history. The game spawned the standalone expansion Interstate '76: Nitro Pack, the sequel Interstate '82, and the Vigilante 8 console spin-off series. The big box original remains the most coveted physical version of the game for collectors.
