Ryusuke returns to the town he once lived in after rumors spread of girls killing themselves following an encounter with a bewitchingly handsome young man. Carrying a secret of his own from his time there, he sets out to catch the boy and close the case. It is the first of ten stories in this collection, which also includes "The Strange Hikizuri Siblings" and "The Rib Woman."
Lovesickness: Junji Ito Story Collection gathers a dozen-year span of Ito's early short horror, led by the title novella Lovesick Dead, originally serialized in Nemuki in 1996 and published in Japan in 1997. This is its first official English release. The volume also includes both Hikizuri siblings stories, and the tone moves from slow-building, Twilight Zone-style dread to straightforward gore. Ito's detailed linework and use of black ink carry the book throughout.
Published by VIZ Media in April 2021 as a 408-page hardcover, the collection won an Eisner Award in 2022.
