Uzumaki is a Japanese supernatural horror manga series by Junji Ito about Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito, who live in the fog-shrouded town of Kurouzu-cho. The town is haunted by a recurring pattern—the spiral—which begins as a psychological obsession and quickly manifests as a physical curse, twisting bodies, objects, and the landscape itself into grotesque, swirling shapes. As the town is slowly consumed by the madness of the spiral, Kirie and Shuichi witness the disintegration of their community into a surreal and terrifying nightmare.
The series is renowned for its masterful use of cosmic and body horror, with intricate, haunting artwork that has made the "spiral" one of the most iconic symbols in the genre. It is often cited as Ito's magnum opus for its ability to transform a simple geometric shape into a source of profound, existential dread.
It was adapted into a live-action film in 2000 and more recently into a highly anticipated, four-episode animated miniseries by studio Drive, featuring a striking black-and-white aesthetic that replicates Ito’s original pen-and-ink style.
