Konata Izumi is an athletic, sharp-minded high schooler whose real devotion goes to anime, games, and otaku culture. Alongside the sharp-tongued Kagami, her sweet and scatterbrained twin sister Tsukasa, and the polite, encyclopedic Miyuki, she spends her school days on small, absurd observations about everyday life: how to eat a chocolate cornet, what makes someone a good gamer, whether a diet is worth it.
Lucky Star is a four-panel comedy manga written and illustrated by Kagami Yoshimizu, serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Comptiq from 2004. There's no real plot. Each strip is a short, dry joke built on conversation and character, and the series is often cited as a defining slice-of-life comedy of the moe era. The first five volumes sold over 1.8 million copies in Japan by April 2008.
Adapted into a 2007 anime by Kyoto Animation, which Bandai Entertainment released in English as six DVD volumes. Bandai also published the manga in English from 2009 to 2011 before the company shut down, covering eight volumes. VIZ Media later picked up the license for digital release.
