Godchild is a darkly elegant Gothic fantasy manga by Kaori Yuki — serialized in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume from 2001 to 2004 and serving as the dramatic climax to the acclaimed Count Cain saga, one of the most atmospherically distinctive works in the author's catalog.

Cain C. Hargreaves is a young, aristocratic Earl in Victorian London, tormented since youth by a tragic past and a toxic family lineage that seems to attract death and bizarre crimes wherever he goes. Alongside his fiercely loyal butler, Riff Raffael, Cain navigates a high society dripping with poison, secrets, and the macabre. Relief from his grim reality is rare, as he is constantly drawn into solving grotesque mysteries and confronting the sins of his ancestors. The ultimate shadow over his life is the Delilah organization, a sinister secret society led by his sadistic biological father, Alexis, which orchestrates horrific experiments and deadly plots. Cain must use his sharp wit, lethal knowledge of poisons, and sheer willpower to dismantle Delilah—even if the cost is his own sanity and survival. And so begins a relentless descent into a world where every case uncovers a twisted obsession, a hidden depravity, or a psychological wound that Cain—slowly, calculatingly, and with aristocratic poise—must unravel.

Where most shōjo series of its era lead with romance or coming-of-age drama, Godchild leads with mood. The series is structured around dark, episodic mysteries—each one a small, macabre fable about vanity, murder, taboo, and the quiet, monstrous ways human beings destroy one another—woven around a slowly deepening conflict regarding the Hargreaves family secrets and Cain's ultimate destiny. Kaori Yuki's art here is at its most lavish and stylized: figures rendered with delicate, sharp-edged elegance, compositions dominated by heavy shadows, Victorian lace, and intricate, ornate details, with Cain's wardrobe and the grotesque crime scenes forming some of the most visually striking pages the artist ever produced. It is genuinely eerie and tragic in a way that sneaks up on you.

The series serves as the definitive final arc of the Count Cain series—building directly upon the characters and dark mythology established in the earlier short stories (The Juliet Society, The Sound of a Boy Crying, Kafka, and The Red Ram), making a complete reading of Cain's entire journey one of the most rewarding and haunting experiences in gothic manga. Godchild was a flagship title for VIZ Media's Shojo Beat imprint during the mid-2000s manga boom, helping define the darker, alternative side of the era's English manga landscape. It remains a cult classic, celebrated for its uncompromising narrative and lush, Victorian aesthetic.

Other Notable Works: Kaori Yuki: The Cain Saga (Direct prequel series — essential backstory), Angel Sanctuary, Ludwig Revolution Comparable Peers: Black Butler / Kuroshitsuji (Victorian supernatural/butler peer), The Portrait of Petit Cossette (Gothic psychological horror peer)
